Mentally Tough
Mental toughness is one of the most valuable assets for an athlete to have, yet it seems elusive to most. Every athlete needs to acquire determination, the ability to stay focused, and the guts to finish even when the task seems impossible. Basically, you must teach yourself NEVER to QUIT!
One of the most important things to remember is, DON’T PANIC. There are a lot of variables in speed skating. Falling, lethargy, and self doubt are among many of the things that can cause you to panic. You start off feeling great, but as the panic sets in you begin to freak out. Your breathing becomes shallow and erratic. Your hands go on your knees and your form goes straight out the window. The key is to stay relaxed and to focus on the things that are in your control. Remember to maintain good breathing and skating technique. Always keep an “I CAN DO IT” attitude. Positive thinking is a great way to reset your state of mind, and it will help you get your breathing and concentration back under control. By staying calm and focused you can push through even the hardest workout, find your second wind and finish strong.
